Movin’ On Up…
And just like the theme song – we’re back on the way up… wow – I mean they told us that there would be up’s and downs but – yeesh these are some ups and downs. So this morning since I had the day off, for the passing of Stella Koop, (my sister-in-law Cindy’s mom) we thought we’d head on up early in the day to see Ayden. And am I ever glad that I did! I got to play with his feet, he would kick out at my hands or push off of my fingers… I played the “this little piggy” song on his toes.. and they are sooooo cute. I have to say – I am rather proud of the little fella, if I do say so myself. Not to worry though I did let Linday in there for at least a few seconds…. (wink) So lets get to the...
Poor little guy
Well Mark and I went to see Ayden last night. We found out that the lumbar puncture fluid did come back positive for infection. Ayden has E. Coli. They don’t know how it happens but all babies are prone to infection in the nicu. Whether it be flu, cold virus, e. coli…who knows how they get them…The good thing is that Ayden is already on Anti-biotics for this infection. I spoke to the nurse last night and asked how long the antibiotics run for and she said based on the infection it could be up to 21 days! I guess they want to keep the antibiotics going to ensure that all the infection is cleared, and I don’t blame them. I did get to hold Ayden last night, but you could tell he was not feeling well. He had some shivers and coughs and was...
Just A Little Dip…
I waited on this update so as not to take away from Lindsay’s awesome news… Last night around 10pm we called in to get the “end of day” results for how Ayden fared. And we were very surprised to hear that another lumbar puncture had occurred. Lumbar Puncture is the proper term I should have used rather than spinal tap. The Doc’s call it an “LB”, your Lumbar being the lower end of your spine. So we call in and find out this has happened and we’re all like “why? he just had one?” – they explain that it’s standard procedure to send away all the fluids for “culture” which means.. they check all the fluids taken from him to see if bacteria will grow from it. If it does, that means that...
WHAT AN AWESOME DAY!!!!
Well this morning I got up at 6 and left for the hospital at 7:30am. You never know what to expect when you get to the hospital, good news…bad news…no change…who knows…The drive in was nice, it was rainy but the roads were not slippery at all and traffic was not too bad. I got to the hospital at just after 8:30, got my parking spot and headed up to the 4th floor to visit Ayden. what a suprise when I got in…. Ayden’s oxygen was down to 26%!!!! This is the lowest it’s been so far! I also found out that Ayden now weighs 990 grams or 2 pounds 2 ounces!!!! I was soo excited just with this news. We reached the 2 pound mark!!! I can’t even tell you how exciting this is. they also had Ayden dressed in a preemie onesie...
December 8th update
So our little guy was having a rough day today. He had quite a few spells where his heart rate would drop and he would stop breathing. His oxygen was up again to between 48-50% and he was really fussy. The nurse told me that they were going to do the spinal tap again today and hopefully that will help. I let the nurse go and let her know that I would call in the afternoon to see how everything went. I was actually really worried before I called this afternoon. You hate to call and get bad news, but you have to call to see how he is doing. So I took a deep breath and called. Ayden had his tap today and the nurse said it went really well…(sigh of relief). They were able to get the fluid out on the first try. They got over 3 mils of fluid and there was no...
December 7th 25 days old!!!!
Well first off i would like to say Happy 25 day old Birthday Ayden Every day we have with him is a joy and a blessing. I am glad the snow stopped so that we could go and visit Ayden. You should see the snow bank outside our house! It’s HUGE…if we could find the battery charger for the camera I would take a picture and post it! we thankfully got to Hamilton to visit our son today. He was a bit grumpy with the nurses today. First off, his oxygen is placed in his nose using these soft rubbery prong like things. well, i guess that he did not like them today, cause he kept moving his little head and the would pop out of his nose…the machines don’t like that! When that happens, all sort of beeps and rings go off to alert the nurses that he is...
Ayden update December 6th
well, Mark and I really wanted to go into see Ayden today, but alas due to the weather it was too unsafe for us to travel. We however did call this afternoon and evening for updates and here they are: The afternoon update revealed to us that Ayden was doing alright, but they were having a bit of difficulty with the spinal tap or lumbar puncture. Apparently when they tried to do the puncture, they were unable to get any fludi, but did get some blood. The blood is either due to a punctured blood vessel, or the blood that was in the head is draining, we are not sure. They tried twice today to do the puncture, but it did not take, so they were going to wait a while to try again. We thanked the nurse for the update and went about our afternoon. The evening update was...
