Just A Little Dip…
I waited on this update so as not to take away from Lindsay’s awesome news… Last night around 10pm we called in to get the “end of day” results for how Ayden fared. And we were very surprised to hear that another lumbar puncture had occurred. Lumbar Puncture is the proper term I should have used rather than spinal tap. The Doc’s call it an “LB”, your Lumbar being the lower end of your spine. So we call in and find out this has happened and we’re all like “why? he just had one?” – they explain that it’s standard procedure to send away all the fluids for “culture” which means.. they check all the fluids taken from him to see if bacteria will grow from it. If it does, that means that there’s an infection present. Now – all this time he hasn’t had any culture return from all the other LB’s he’s had. But this last time they got some… what this means….
Well they had to perform another puncture to see if “yes” there is infection, or perhaps, and what they suspect is that the site of the repeated punctures may have “contaminated” the sample they sent. So if this next sample shows no sign of “Culture” when they try and grow some bacteria off it. Then he’s got an infection where his needles are going in. So regardless of which is the case they make a preemptive strike on all forms of infections for a child this size. And he’s back on Antibiotics again… Now because this has happened there are other protocols that kick in and one of those was to take a sample of his blood and test it. The results from that said that he doesn’t have enough Hemoglobin in his blood to support his oxygen needs. (Hemoglobin is part of what makes your blood red, and it carries the O2 through your blood to where you need it) I guess he’s got a 70 on that test and they like to see 90 or higher… so he’s getting another blood transfusion. Once again from the same donor… (thank you who ever you are)
Other than that… all his vitals are still happy and he’s still resting comfortably in his giraffe… (aka incubator)
Great to hear things are going well! We are a little glum here with Cindy’s mom passing away today yet news of Ayden’s progress is helping to pick us up… Our thoughts and prayers are with you and it’s exciting to hear of the small victories he is achieving!
Keep well and trust the new house is awesome and you’re seeing fewer boxes and bins every day!
Matt….
