Feb 5th
Sorry for the lag in the updates, but a lot has happened in the last few days. Since the car died and I am travelling quite a bit to and from the hospital, I was spending most of my day driving and it was just getting exhausting. On monday this week my dad came to pick me up so I could stay at his house in Oakville which is only a 20 minute drive to the hospital rather then over an hour from our house. I can’t tell you how hard it is to be away from home…. But Ayden is doing so well with the breastfeeding that I am feeding 4x’s a day now. This means that I am spending most of my day at the hospital with the little man. So far we have had successful feedings…except for this morning…he was a fussy little man and didn’t know what...
Ayden update Feb 2nd
Hi there. Dad is still feeling really sick….I hope that he gets better soon…. As for Ayden, it’s been a rather busy weekend for him. First off, he weighs 2659 grams or 5 pounds 13.79 ounces!!! sooo close to 6 pounds! This weekend we have also started breastfeeding twice a day, 9am and 9pm. This means that I have to drive back and forth to Hamilton twice a day…(and lets not speak of the truck breaking down…). But Ayden is doing well with the breastfeeding. He is getting the hang of it, but gets tired really fast. They also took his feed and did what is called a bolus feed. His food was going into his tummy by using a pump that pushed the food through a feeding tube. A bolus feed is where you put the milk into a syringe and hold it...
Cherry To Top It Off
Well Dad here one more time… as if this weekend hasn’t been fun enough I’ve spent the last few hours puking my brains out. I must of filled at least a liter and a half in the bucket I have here… granted after that I feel great. General rule RockStar energy drink is HORRIBLE the second time around… omg it’s bad… make it stop… on the up side I wont have to worry about how things are gonna work with cars on Mon as I’m sick as can be… weeee lots of fun.
Not Every Day Can Be A Gem…
Hey’a folks, Dad here – we’ve had one of those days where you really should never get out of bed… but there was a silver lining to it… that we choose to see. The day started at around 6:30am for me.. which means I had about 3.5 hours sleep… so I grabbed a shower and off we went. We got to the hospital after stopping for gas… at this point things are good. We meet with the nurse for an update and quickly proceeded to breastfeeding.. I say we but Lindsay’s the superstar there… Ayden latched on, out of the gate and Lindsay was doing things like a pro… The new area that Ayden is in is really not very private, you have to wheel over a curtain on a metal frame and the room isn’t level so the frame tends...
eyes and hearing
Just a quick update. Ayden had his ears tested this week and he passed… WOO HOO… Each week Ayden was receiving eye exams and during the exam this past monday they noticed that some of the blood vessels in his left eye are not growing properly. So they are going to continue to monitor him and if need be they will do some laser eye surgery on the little guy. This will correct it. The name for the problem is called Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). ROP is an eye disease. IT affects the retina, the back surface of the eye that is responsible for vision. The retina works like a file in a camera. When light strikes the retina a picture is made. The macula, at the center of the retina, absorbs light and helps with seeing colors. In preterm babies, the...
Ayden progress Jan 30th
So Last night Dad and I traveled to hamilton for some dad snuggle time. We arrived at about 7:30 and Dad sat down in the chair while I got Ayden ready for some snuggles. Snuggle time for dad was great. He sang all sorts of songs to Ayden and just had some relaxing time. Snuggle time however was interrupted when the nurse came over and said that Ayden was going to be transferred to level 2. Now for those that don’t know, Ayden has been in a level 3 ward at the hospital…this is the highest level of care for a preemie or newborn. Level 2 is like a graduation!! he is doing so well and is stable that they transferred him. It’s one more step closer to coming home. So Dad changed the diaper, the nurse checked Aydens vitals (temperature etc) and then...
Cuddles keep me sane!!!
So today I went down to the hospital for my daily visit with Ayden. I arrived at 10:30 to a soundly sleeping baby boy. He was lying on his tummy with his hands at his face all tucked in. He looked so peaceful, I just sat down and watched him sleep. He finally started to stir at about 11:45 so the nurse came over and checked his lungs to make sure they sounded clear and they did. Then I changed his diaper…smelly boy…LOL…and it was then time for some mom and Ayden time. We had a 20 minute breast feeding trial today. He latched really well, but then would pull his head away, and then would re-latch…but it was enjoyable and he did get some milk from me too! After we had our breastfeeding time, we hooked his milk up to his feeding tube. (they...
