What a crazy day!!!
Well today has been such a crazy hectic day….
Ayden has an iv in his left hand in order to give him antibiotics, but you can only leave an iv in for so long…so this morning at 5am, they had to remove the iv from his hand to another vein in his body…the problem is that they tried a vein in his other hand and it didn’t work, they tried one on his left side of his head and it didn’t work and they finally found one on the right side…whew (3 needles so far…)
Due to the iv troubles, they can’t feed the babies right away as they are under a lot of stress and will spit the food back up…so Ayden’s 6am feed did not get run until 7:30. By the time I arrived at 9 for his feed, his tummy was still digesting the food from the last feed and he was fast asleep. The nurse suggested that I pass on the 9am feed and come back for noon…
So I left the hospital and spent some time relaxing at my dad’s house in Oakville where I am living right now.
I arrived back at the hospital for 11:30 and Ayden was awake waiting for me to feed him and that’s just what I did and he did really well!
After his food time, I snuggled with him and sang to him as he had a rough morning…and then I left the hospital at 2 when he feel asleep…
In the mean time, my breast pump has not been working so well. There was no suction in the pump at all. I had called the company who makes it (Medela) earlier on this week and they went through some troubleshooting with me, but it didn’t work. I called them back today as the problem was still not solved and my milk production has decreased (part due to stress and part to the improper working pump). They actually sent a rep out to the house to check the pump! What service!!! The rep arrived, checked all the parts and then proceeded to replace the whole motor! Thank goodness it’s still under warranty!
So with that repaired and the breast feeding starting to get underway, I was happy to go back to the hospital to feed Ayden.
I got back to the hospital at 6:15pm (stuck in traffic for an hour and a half) and the nurse looked at me with tired eyes…
Apparently when Ayden was waking from sleep he pulled his feeding tube out…then the nurse started to do his vitals (blood pressure, temperature and listening to his chest) and when she was doing that, he quickly turned his head and the iv popped out…since it was still in a vein, his head started to bleed….
So they had to call the iv people to put it back in, but I guess that again they couldn’t find a vein that was good enough. He was poked in his foot, heal, leg, arm and head again (up to 8 needles now) but none of them worked. They decided that since his next round of antibiotics was not until 10pm this evening, they would just let him rest without trying any more until later…
So when I arrived, he was really upset and stressed out to the max. They didn’t think he would breast feed, but what I did was I put him to breast as that is very calming for him. While I did that the nurse hooked up his milk through the feeding tube…Ayden calmed down right away. He latched and then fell asleep…poor little guy has band-aids all over his body right now.
So I held him for a long time while he slept and just comforted him. He kept opening his eyes, but when he saw me and heard my voice he went back to sleep. It was like he was checking to make sure I was still there.
So 8:30 rolls around. The nurse did Ayden’s vitals while I held him as he was relaxed in my arms. I had a choice tonight…since he has had such a rough tiring day, i could either give him a bath or I could breastfeed him at 9. I opted for a bath and snuggle.
So I weighed him (6 pounds 5.6 ounces) and gave him a nice warm bath that he LOVED and was quite angry when it was over…LOL…
Then I tried to put him to breast just to see what he would do, but he was just too tired and because of all the stress of the day, his heart rate kept dropping…so I just snuggled with him for a bit.
But knowing that he still had to have an iv put in at 10pm for his antibiotics, I left so he could get some rest…
I did just call the hospital and they got the iv in his head again on the first try…thank goodness…9 needles in one day is a lot for a little man.
Apparently the nurse actually said that he stayed asleep from the time that I left him and slept even through the iv being put in…he’s just exhausted!
So I hope that tomorrow is a better day…
Oh, I found out a few things this week. First off Ayden has a urinary tract infection (e-coli)…They think that he was just starting to get sick on Monday and with the illness, eye exam and change in food it was too much for him to take and that’s why he aspirated. His lungs are cleared and the antibiotics he is on is for his lungs and also the e-coli infection.
What a crazy day today, but what a crazy week as well…
Poor Ayden… I can’t even imagine! Your cousins and I are all thinking about you all the time and praying for the day you get all better and strong enough to come home! Love you!!!
Your an amazing mom don’t you forget it Ayden is lucky to have such a strong mom there for him comforting him during this time. Keep your head up and your heart strong you will get through this!!! and amaze even yourself. I can’t even imagine how difficult this is for both you and Mark not being together during this time but your love for each other is strong and it will prevail.
