January 17th…66 days old
Well our little guy is doing really well. As per the earlier post, he took his CPAP off all on his own and he actually lasted almost 24 hours without any breathing intervention! They have put him back on what is called a low flow oxygen tube. Its a very small light tube that just sits inside your nose and gives just a small amount of oxygen. Ayden seems to be swinging a bit so they put him on this for a little bit. He should not need it for too long. He does not have anything restricting his face with this tubing, its just a little tape to hold it in place!
His food has been changed to 40 mils and tonight he gets weighed so we will update that when we find out the new weight.
I was at the hospital yesterday and found that I was displeased with the care he was receiving. When I arrived at the hospital, I asked the nurse if I could get him for a cuddle. She had no problem with that whatsoever. She pulled over the chair for me, and proceeded to get Ayden all wrapped up in a blanket for me to hold. When she placed him on me, I noticed an aroma…so I told the nurse that it seemed like he had a full diaper and was really smelly…her response was that it was not time for him to be changed (they do this every three hours) and that he would be changed at the appropriate time. I was really upset by this. I mean, every other nurse has checked him before placing him on me to ensure that he did not have a full diaper, but this nurse did not care…or so it seemed. When we did finally finish the snuggle and she put him back into the incubator, she changed his diaper…it was so full and was all over his bum and lower back….had she changed it when I suggested he would have been much happier.
So Mark and I went to the hospital today, and low and behold it was the same nurse. I had told Mark about the happenings before we went and we were prepared to comment on this to whomever we needed to…so Mark watched this nurse closely and also noticed that she was not as frequent with her hand sanitation…
So one of the nice nurses we have had came over to see how Ayden was doing, while she was there, we questioned her about protocol and how this should be handled. She said that the diaper change from the day before could have been left as if it is right after Ayden has his food, they don’t want to disturb the babies as the babies will spit up their meal so they wait until the tummy is empty which is every 3 hours for Ayden….so basically he is left in his diaper until the appropriate time. She did say that if we requested a diaper change it should have been done, so we know for next time to be more aggressive and if the nurse does not help, we will do it ourselves.
Mark then asked about the hand sanitation and the nice nurse just said to keep an eye on it and speak our mind. If we see a nurse going inside the incubator without sanitation, say something. We have in the past done this so it’s nothing new, but we wanted to make sure we were following the right protocol…
So we feel better after talking with the nurses there and we will have to speak our minds when we are there. Sometimes you feel like you should not say anything, but this is our boy. He has already been through E-Coli and maybe that was why….
But…he is just doing great. Today he had the hic-ups and he makes the cutest noise when he is hic-uping! He was doing some stretching as well….He really like the head massage that I was giving him, was so relaxing that Mark almost fell asleep watching!!! LOL…He is also going to be vaccinated on Monday to (can’t remember againt what…)…they only do this when the babies are stable and weight is not an issue!
So I will update his weight a bit later in the evening when we know what it is…I wonder if he is 5 pounds….
