November 27th update
As we do everyday, we start the day with a phone call to the hospital and we end the day with a phone call to the hospital. Talking with our favorite nurse Julie, we leared that at 4:00pm this afternoon a spinal tap was done to Ayden. No you are probably wondering what this means and why this is done, so here is a brief explanation.
The spine, is like a big straw that goes right up to your brain. In the center of the spine or straw run your nerve connections and spinal fluid. This is the same fluid that is in Ayden’s brain. The fluid in his brain has been building up over the past few weeks and creating a lot of pressure in his head. This in turn has affected Ayden’s breathing, feedings and heart rate. As such, we have given the doctor’s approval to do this procedure. So, today an ultrasound was done by Dr. Shaw, who saw the two fluid spaces in the brain had increased in size again, decided not to wait before any more damage was done and proceded with the tap. They pulled 11.5 mil’s of fluid out of the spine!!!! This is equivalent to 2.5 teaspoons. As a result, we have been told that he is doing much better tonight. He seems very comfortable, he has not had any spells and he has been a joy to deal with. We asked how often this will be done, and basically this depends on the ultrasound and how his brain fluid builds up. It could just be a matter of flushing the remainder of the blood out, or this could be a ongoing problem that would require a shunt, only time will tell….
So, to end our day, our little boy is happy. He is in good care, and he is having procedures done as soon as he needs them, there is no delay for our authorization as we have already given this. We are hoping that having the procedures done will help him in the future…
We also had a wonderful phone call from the Minister of Calvin church in Kitchener. Mark was kind enough to take some time out of his day and go so far as to pray with us over the phone. He will also have an additional prayer in church for the next little while and will keep Ayden and our family in his thoughts and prayers. For this we are ever grateful. And as always, we ask any of you that have a free moment, that you say a small prayer for Ayden and his health.
As we have the move tomorrow from Kitchener to Baden, we will update you when we are back on line.
Thanks for all your thoughts and support.
